Focus on Men  - Parliament House Canberra

Osteoporosis Australia hosted a special event at Parliament House Canberra on 1 October in the lead up to World Osteoporosis Day and released national survey results and new awareness guides for men. The survey found significant gaps in men’s knowledge about their risk of poor bone health. Key findings:

  • 40% of men aged 18-24 believed osteoporosis is rare for men to get
  • Overall about 60% of men did not believe they were are at risk of the disease

This is despite worldwide figures showing one third of hip fractures occur in men. In Australia 30% of all fractures due to poor bone health will occur in men over 50.

Former Wallaby Pat Mccabe supported the event to help raise awareness and urged all men to think about their bones. He has experienced broken bones first hand from his playing career and admitted just about everything is harder with a broken bone.

The event was attended by politicians and advisors from all sides of politics and representatives from national organisations including –  Pharmacy Guild of Australia, Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, Carers Australia, Catholic Health, Dept Of Health, Pharmaceutical Society of Australia and Medicines Australia.

Osteoporosis Australia Chairman John Hewson joined Patron Helen Dalley in thanking guests for their support and Medical Director Professor Peter Ebeling outlined why preventing fractures is a priority. Gail Morgan CEO of Osteoporosis Australia said “we have a clear message for Aussie men - look after your bones. We have released new materials to raise awareness and help men identify risk factors and how to support their bone health” she said.
